Did you know...
U.S. imports of fresh mangos in 2004 were 638 million pounds,
valued at $196 million. This is 5 million pounds less than
2003, but 110 million pounds ( 21%) more than what was imported
in 2000.
Both the volume and revenue for Peruvian mangos increased
significantly in 2004 versus 2003.
There are more than 1,000 different varieties of mangos in
the world, but only 5 major commercial varieties are marketed
in the U.S. today: Tommy Atkins, Haden, Kent, Francine &
Ataulfo.
Considered
the perfect fruit, mangos are an excellent source of vitamins
A and C, potassium, beta carotene, are low in calories and
fat-free.
Mangos contain an enzyme that is similar to the papain found
in fresh papayas, and helps to soothe the stomach. Rich in
vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants, the enzymes contained
in fresh mangos act as a digestive aid and provide a feeling
of contentment - mangos make you feel good!
The fiber content in an average mango represents 4% of the
daily fiber requirement. Daily fiber helps strengthen the
heart, lowers blood cholesterol levels, and may, according
to research, help prevent certain types of cancers.
People who are physically active can replenish lost potassium
by eating fresh mangos.
